EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
