Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
However, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few do not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing these files for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to enact a law requiring the files' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
