The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.
He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
