Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
